How To Dry Out Crawl Space For Mold Prevention

How To Dry Out Crawl Spaces Some great information here if your looking to learn how to dry out crawl space areas. Perhaps you want to prevent black mold or any other mold and mildews from taking over.

Be sure to watch the videos below for some more excellent crawlspace tips on keeping everything nice and dry.

Any crawl space can be cleaned and kept dry, but the process varies immensely.

These variations can include:

  • The Type of Foundation and Home Construction
  • The Crawl Space Depth and Size
  • The Soil Types and Conditions
  • Past Ventilation and the Drainage or Moisture Control Techniques Used Previously in the Home

How To Dry Out Crawl Space – 7 Basic Steps

A crawl space having work doneHere is what is needed to bring the home environment into comfort, security and compliance. The homeowners level of need or the order of steps taken varies on the factors listed above. Here is the process:

1. Down-Spout Extensions – Check grading for positive drainage away from your home and make sure all downspouts are extended properly and gutters kept clean.

2. Sump Pump and Pit – In crawl spaces with standing water, a properly installed sump pump is vital for water collection and removal. The pit must have several holes drilled in it to allow water infiltration as well as a good gravel back-fill around the liner.

3. Internal Perimeter Drainage System – The drainage system installation consists of hand trenching the interior perimeter, laying a 4″ perforated, corrugated flex tile in the trench, and back-filling the tile with a filtration aggregate. This prevents unwanted sediment from entering the drains and ensures lifetime operation.

4. Vapor Barrier – A durable 6mil poly liner placed on the crawl space floor surface to reduce some of the moisture. This step is necessary over a drained crawl space, but an encapsulation system is recommended.

5. Clean Space Encapsulation System – An encapsulation system completely isolates the earthen floor from the home structural envelope. The liner is a heavy 20-mil-thick material similar to a pool liner that totally prohibits moisture penetration. The CleanSpace liner is COMPLETELY SEALED over the floor and walls to fully isolate your home from the earth. Encapsulation totally seals off all outside ventilation and is the ultimate in vapor barrier protection, all the while reducing radon gas, ground odors, insect infiltration and thus helping to control mold spores and their propagation. Also, by sealing off outside ventilation, your home will become more energy efficient!!!

6. Crawl Space Conditioning – Conditioning can be achieved by the actual heating/cooling of the encapsulated area by the opening of ducted pipes into the crawlspace. Average duct leakage may be sufficient conditioning in some crawl spaces.

Dehumidifiers play a crucial role in drying the crawl space7. Dehumidification – A Key To Drying Out A Crawl Space

Dehumidification is necessary for removing remaining excess moisture from the air and making your home free of mold and mildew. Want to dry out crawl space? Be sure to check all of the options before buying a dehumidifier

Some will remove a few quarts of water a day while others can take out 90 quarts of water from the air daily. So determine the best size for your crawlspace scenario.

Keeping your crawl space clean and dry will be extremely helpful in preventing future mold exposure problems

2) Black mold abatement and remediation solutions without the unnecessary expense can now be achieved.

I found this rather scary article about what exposure to Stachybotrys chartum could bring about as far as symptoms are concerned. While the article represents truthful facts, it doesn’t offer much in the area of mold abatement solutions.

Also, there are ways to reducing the cause of mold growth, primarily eliminating the water or moisture problem from your home. There are more solutions and I encourage you to also read this about black mold removal for a more in-depth report. Also, be sure to watch the mold video below featuring a nurse practitioner discussing mold related health problems and investigate another article about how to remove black mold.

Black Mold Health Effects Should Be Seriously Looked Into

The severity of black mold health effects are rising due to the spores and mycotoxins that are released into the air. This has to be seriously checked by monitoring the entire house including every corner.

The presence of a musty odor within the house usually indicates mold growth somewhere around the origin of this smell. If you feel discomfort in breathing while in bed or if you find the humidity of the air excessively increased, you need to be alarmed. It’s possible the mold spores have started spreading vigorously with inhaling. You can move out-of-doors to breathe in some fresh air if you experience these problems at home after which serious steps are to be taken to get rid of these molds.

The airborne feature of mold spores is the major reason for increased black mold health effects. Due to the disposal of airborne spores in the air, the possibility of these reaching the lungs cannot be neglected.

After these mold spores adhere onto the surface of the lungs, it can produce dreadful symptoms even leading to bleeding of the lungs. Therefore the black mold removal is important and should to be given prime importance and the same to be given to flush out any presence of black molds within the house premises.

Black mold health related issues have put some people in perilSome of the effects include watery eyes, itchy throat, excessive coughing, headaches, irritates skin, memory loss, excess mucus, fatigue, mold in the bloodstream, lung bleeding and even the possibility of mild strokes cannot be neglected. These symptoms vary from one individual depending on the type of exposure.

The symptoms related to black mold exposure can vary from nausea to even the removal of lungs due to continued exposure to this toxic mold.

The wet season can also be the mold season in many areas of the country. Mold is often found near sources of water where it can easily grow and reproduce.

Damage from water often equals mold damage as well. As it grows, mold can breakdown and compromise the integrity and strength of the source in which it lives. When large amounts of mold spores grow, they can also compromise the health of the people living near it. Black mold can be killed, but if it is not removed properly, it can remain in the area just cleaned and the dry spores can be released into the air.

Removing Carpet Mold: Prevention

If you have black mold in carpet, chances are you failed to keep your carpet dry. Or, you could not control the humidity levels inside your home.

Mold water damage is quite common with carpets. Several sources can dampen your carpets. Identify the main sources of moisture so that you can take the right steps to keep your carpets dry.

Leaky roofs, overflowing kitchen sink, improper carpet washing or floor cleaning that leaves the carpet wet for long, poor housekeeping and many other accidental cases can moisten your carpets.

A single drop of water spreads along the fibers of the carpets very fast. As a result, a wide area of the carpet gets damp quickly.

To keep the carpets dry, repair the leaks or the drainage problem that makes your kitchen sink overflow. If water falls on carpets accidentally, make sure it is dried off as soon as possible.

Pets often wet the carpets. Train your pets so that they do not spoil the carpets. And if they do it on carpets, use pet urine and odor removal products to clean the place. So as soon as you get any nasty odor and if you have pets in your home, inspect your carpets carefully.

High humidity often makes your carpets damp. Use a dehumidifier to control in-house humidity. Make sure the dehumidifier is specified for the size of room you will use it in. Keep your home well ventilated and do your best to keep the carpets clean.

10 More Indoor Air Quality Problems

Mold And Water Damaged Building Materials

When leakage occurs it results in the growth of mold that in turn results in the release of pungent smelling and irritating volatile organic compounds, and allergenic black mold spores into your air.

Persons with allergies or asthma often have reactions to such contaminates in the air while others may have no reaction at all. People with compromised immune systems may even contract infections from some molds. Fungal infections can be a product of a person’s poor health than of the environment they are in.

Mold Air Filter & Mold Air Cleaners

However, in addition to other mold allergy reactions and health problems, recent research has shown that mold is the primary cause of Chronic Sinusitis. As mold problems can vary greatly from one home to the next, investigate possible solutions.

An complete environmental mold treatment kit that is part of a mold reduction protocol, consists of several components designed to work together to reduce airborne mold. More information on this follows:

A safe air treatment solution dispenses a botanical cleansing agent throughout a room to effectively reduce mold and other harmful contaminants that you would otherwise inhale.

Quality HEPA room air purifier filters a lot of dirty moldy air quietly. enough not to disturb a conversation or your sleep. Updraft air exhaust gives you more air cleaner efficiency by cleaning all the air in a room, not just what is close to the machine.
The Vent Filtration Kit is a simple and basic environmental control. A high-grade mold air filter, polyester, filters dust and mold coming out of the duct work. Easy to install, just cut the filters to the size of your incoming air vents. A purifying spray is used each day on the above vent filter and this will help eliminate mold from coming into a room.

Remember! Always wear a N-95 rated mask in rooms where the mold counts are high like the basement or garage or when working outside.

Indoor Air Quality Testing For Mold

Many private testing labs offer mold test kits for detection of presence of molds, mold-toxins and their spores on different surfaces and in the household air samples. Mold tests are usually divided into two categories: air and surface.

It is always a good idea to take at least one surface sample and one air sample from your home as single type sampling alone would not accurately portray the extent of mold growth.

Remember that when looking to buy a mold testing kit, the prices may seen to vary quite a bit.

Some test kits come with a full lab report included while others simply supply the single mold kit and charge for the lab report should you have mold growing in the dish.

Dust Mites And Particulates

Air contaminated with excess particles can also cause negative reactions. Some particles cause direct irritation when levels are elevated.

In the case of house dust, people do not typically have a direct allergenic or irritation related reaction. Common dust is as much as 80% dead human skin cells thus the dust itself is not seen as a forging invader by your body.

When people have allergic reactions to common household dust it is not the dust causing the problem but allergenic proteins found in dust mite feces.

Today there are clean and natural ways to kill dust mites & fleas and keep them away. Used as a spray or in a carpet steamer machine, these are absolutely fatal to mites & fleas. Plus, these products are completely natural and harmless to your loved ones and your pets.

Particles counters can be used to measure airborne particulates, particle counters are highly sensitive scientific instruments that use an internal laser to count particles passing through it that are of a predetermined size range.

Good quality pleated filters at your AC unit return can help reduce dust, also use a good quality vacuum that is equipped with a HEPA filter. A bad vacuum cleaner will remove dust from your carpets then blow it into your face!

Carbon Dioxide

High carbon dioxide levels are not typically a direct threat to human health in home and commercial properties. High carbon dioxide levels usually indicate a lack of adequate outdoor air being introduced into the building. Dust, chemicals, body odors and other indoor air pollutants often build up along with carbon dioxide in poorly ventilated buildings, and it is these other indoor pollutants that result in indoor air quality complaints and health complaints.

According to Parat and others ‘A properly maintained and operated mechanical ventilation system can reduce indoor Bioaerosols concentrations by limiting infiltration of outdoor Bioaerosols and by diluting those from outdoor sources’ ( Parat et al., 1994, 1996 ).

According to American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers ASHRAE 62-89 Outdoor air supply into the building should be at least 20 cubic foot per min per person in offices and thus help maintain carbon dioxide levels below 1000 ppm.

Newer requirements recommend levels no more than 700 ppm higher than outdoor carbon dioxide levels. Outdoor air that is being introduced into a building must meet the US EPA National Primary Ambient Air Quality Standards is short it must be clean or it must be properly filtered.

In conclusion, letting clean dry outdoor air into homes and commercial buildings can help dilute and flush out indoor pollutants.

Carbon Monoxide

WARNING: Carbon monoxide can rapidly rob your bloods ability to properly absorb oxygen thus it can be deadly. If carbon monoxide levels at your property are dangerously high then emergency measures such as immediate evacuation may be deemed necessary. Even if slightly elevated, further investigation by a qualified, licensed specialist is recommended and appropriate repairs or other measures may be needed.

The leading cause of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning in homes is automobile exhaust escaping from garages, however improper combustion of fuel in gas appliances, improper ventilation of combustion gases to the exterior, and cracked heat exchangers are also important sources of carbon monoxide exposure.

At low concentrations, the health effects are fatigue in healthy people and chest pain in persons with heart disease. At higher concentrations it causes impaired vision and coordination problems, headaches, dizziness, confusion, nausea. It can cause flu like symptoms that clear up after leaving home. Carbon monoxide is fatal at very high concentrations.

Average levels in homes without gas stoves 0.5 to 5 ppm.

Levels near properly adjusted gas stoves are 5 to 15 ppm.

Near poorly adjusted stoves 30 ppm or higher.

The above information is from http://epa.gov/iaq/co.html
If you have an attached garage, or any types of gas burning appliances or devices in your building or home have it checked for carbon monoxide. Make sure that gas appliances are working properly and properly vented to the exterior.

VOC’s

Volatile organic compound also known as VOC’s are common indoor pollutants composed of organic chemicals that evaporate into the air easily, they often cause chemical odors, respiratory irritation, headache, and other indoor air quality related complaints. At certain high levels they can be dangerous.

These chemicals are released by paints, paint thinners, varnish, new carpets, new cabinets and furniture that contain particle board, household cleaners and air fresheners, fuel gas, improperly vented combustion devices, photocopier machines, blueprint machines, and many other sources. Refrain from the excessive use of household product that contains chemicals.

Purchase paints and new carpets with low emission levels of voc’s. Solid wood cabinets and furnishings contain less voc’s than those composed of particle board type materials. When using chemicals or when installing new carpets, paints, cabinets, and other furnishings let the property air out in a safe and reasonable way. Healthy buildings will typically contain less than 1 ppm or even less than .5 ppm.

Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a common volatile organic compound that results in lots of indoor air quality problems, it is found in glues used in the manufacture of particle board, wood veneers, wood furniture, plywood, and other wood products.

It is also found in some spray-on insulating foams. These resins slowly give off formaldehyde over time. Formaldehyde is one of the more common indoor air pollutants. At concentrations above 0.1 ppm in air, formaldehyde can irritate the eyes and mucous membranes, resulting in watery eyes.

If inhaled, formaldehyde at this concentration may cause headaches, a burning sensation in the throat, and difficulty breathing, as well as triggering asthma symptoms.

The above recommendations made in regards to other volatile organic compounds also applies to formaldehyde.

Sewer Gas

Hydrogen sulfide it the gas that produces rotten egg or sulfur like odors in well water, sewer systems, rotten eggs, and other areas where water and organic compounds have a lack of oxygen.

Hydrogen sulfide odors may lead to complaints of foul odors and also eye & throat irritation cough and shortness of breath. According to wikipedia “.0047 ppm is the recognition threshold, the concentration at which 50% of humans can detect the characteristic rotten egg odor of hydrogen sulfide.”10 to 15 ppm is the borderline concentration for eye irritation.

Drain pipes have letter u shaped curve that traps water, you have seen this under your sinks, and this trapped water is intended to keep sewer gas from backing up from the sewer system and into your home. Make sure that drains such as basement floor drains, sink drains, and even toilet bowls etc contain some water. If the water evaporates from a drains p trap then sewer gas will back up into the building.

In vacant properties anaerobic bacterial may invade your water heater and produce sulfur gas odors in your drinking water, in properties with well water similar bacteria may invade your well water system and create strong sulfur odors. The latter two conditions are annoying but are typically thought of as harmless and can be repaired by a plumber or well water service company.

No2

Nitrogen dioxide is composed of nitrogen and oxygen atoms, incomplete combustion in vehicles or gas burning appliances can create this pollutant and improper venting of such combustion gases from gas appliances, loading docks, and parking garages, can result in the gas entering into the indoor environment.

Nitrogen dioxide is a respiratory irritation. If you have any types of gas burning appliances or devices in your building or home have the property checked for nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and other combustion gases. Make sure that gas appliances are working properly and properly vented to the exterior.

O3

Ozone is a fresh smelling oxygen molecule composed of 3 oxygen atoms, the oxygen we breathe is made of just two oxygen molecules. In the upper atmosphere ozone blocks out harmful UV light thus protecting living organisms below, at ground level ozone is an air pollutant that can have harmful effects on our respiratory system in fact ozone is a constitute of smog pollution. Asthmatics are especially at risk from the effects of heavy ozone exposure.

Despite claims of safe levels of fresh smelling ozone emitted by ozone producing machines, some ozone machines have been found to produce ozone at too high of a level, that may result in respiratory irritation in some persons.

It is true that ozone can break down smoke, odors, and other air contaminates but the break down product follow the most basic laws of physics and thus does disappear from existence but instead these products have end up in the air where some of them can serves as irritants to sensitive persons.

Radon Gas And Testing

Last but not least on or list of 13 sinister Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) problems is radon, a colorless odorless gas that finds its way into buildings through cracks in the foundations. If a building is negatively pressurized then that negative pressure can cause radon to be actively sucked into the building.

Radon is unheard of in some areas such as South Florida; in other areas such as New England radon is common. Radon is a carcinogen or cancer causing agent. Often persons living with radon will have no clue that the problem exists till it is to late. Even in non smokers radon causes lung cancer.

If you know of a household where a non smoker developed lung cancer you should suggest that the home or the victim’s previous residence be tested for radon gas. According to the EPA and the surgeon general radon is responsible for 15,000 deaths a year.

Here is the video about indoor air quality testing for mold using a mold test.

5 Places In The Home To Find and Remove Black Molds and Mildews

A guide to identify domestic places where black mold grows rapidly and repeatedly. These places should be cleaned frequently with natural, organic and safe black mold clean up products.

Toxic black molds and powdery mildews lead to serious health concerns. Homes, offices and all the premises should be protected from black molds. Unless you are aware about the conditions and places where molds can grow, proper protections cannot be taken. Here we would discuss about Top 5 places in house that are heaven for black mold. The main three conditions that support spore germination and mold growth are:

  1. Moisture
  2. Temperature
  3. Food source

Household places that support all three conditions are prone to mold attacks. Let’s see what those places are and how to stop mold growth there.

Black Mold Clean Up And Locations

1. Crawl spaces: Once water enters into the crawl spaces it wets the soil and molds begin to amplify and grow. Chances of mold contamination are much higher in the crawl space that is dirty. You may think that why one needs to worry about crawlspace molds as they are outside your home? The reason is excessive mold growth may result in spore formation and these spores can enter indoor anytime.

Remedy: Make certain, not a drop of water enters there; and if water enters anyway, don’t let it condense on the crawl space surface. Also, keep the place clean and tidy. Use 100% natural mold killers designed to break up the mold DNA and prevent it from coming back.

2. Basements: Basements often catch damp. Hot and moist air, when comes into contact with cold basement walls, condenses and moistens the environment. As there is less ventilation, the damp air stays inside and adds to relative humidity of the place. The darkness of basements acts like a catalyst and enhances mold growth.

Remedy: Exhaust fans can be used to ease the air circulation. Also, insulating the walls may prevent moisture condensation. Humidifiers may be helpful to keep the relative humidity level low. The place should be kept clean and adequately warm.

3. Kitchen, Bathroom, Laundry walls: These areas of your house possess high risk to mold contamination. You cannot stop water usage in the kitchen, nor in the bathroom and laundry area. The moisture content automatically increases in these places of your home, so does the probability of black mold growth. The walls near the faucets and showers, the lower surface of the kitchen sink, the shower curtain often show moldy specks.

Remedy: Sufficient ventilation is the only solution. Adequate air flow stops mold formation by reducing moisture content. Artificial air dryer can also be used. Clean the places with natural cleaning products regularly.

4. Carpet and Wallpapers: Molds often grow and hide beneath the carpets. They spread right under your nose but you cannot notice them unless the musty odor covers the room. Same thing happens with wallpapers. Black molds and mildews obtain the nutrition from the wallpaper glue and start growing at the back.

Remedy: Using mold cleaner could give you satisfactory result. Natural mold cleaners not only kill black molds and mildews but remove the musty odor from your home too.

5. Building walls: Exterior and interior walls of your home can catch damp if there is any plumbing problem. Wooden sidings often soak water after rain and take a lot of time to dry providing the perfect condition for mildews to grow. Excessive rain or huge water pipe leakage may damage the internal walls too.

Remedy: Don’t let water stay long on the walls. Roof overhang, glossy paints for walls and sidings may be helpful. Leave enough space for air to flow and dry damp walls and sidings and let enough sunlight to fall on the walls. Insulate the internal walls to protect it from dampening.

Mildews and black mold grow in dirty and damp places. Cleaning your home regularly with a 100% organic mold kit that will kill black mold in your home and help you avoid indoor mold growth.

Health Effects Of Long Term Mold Exposure

It is now estimated that nearly 24 million people here in the US suffer the ill effects of exposure to mold in one form or another. Learn about the symptoms of mold poisoning and what you can do to prevent it. Preventing mold allergies and exposure is key.

Toxic Black Mold: Symptoms of Black Mold Poisoning

Mildew or mold (a type of fungi), which is found in damp environment can have serious effect on human health. Every year thousands of people suffer from black mold poisoning. Let us understand and learn important steps needed to be followed in case of mold poisoning.

Black Mold
Mildew or mold (also known as black mold or toxic mold) is a type of fungi that develops and grows on surfaces in the form of powdery or downy substance.

Humid/damp surfaces in combination with a very moderate temperature and sufficient amount of light provide the best conditions for mold growth.

The toxic mold grows on walls, wood, clothes, food, carpets or any article such sofa (made of leather) etc. The mold growth is not confined only to walls, clothes and surfaces of furniture, it also can grow inside the equipment like air conditioners, HVAC systems etc.

The humidity level/dampness (which is the most important factor for mold growth) on the various surfaces is caused due to many conditions such as leak in the surface causing water to drip and form a damp surface, sufficient humidity in surrounding environment, condensation phenomenon etc.

Look For The Signs Of Mold And Get Rid Of It

  • Moisture on the surfaces: Moisture or dampness on surfaces (of wall, wood, clothes etc.) can be treated as very first sign of mold growth (although moisture does not mean mold formation and growth, it is a very important condition for mold formation).
  • Stains on the wall: Yellowish stains on the wall caused due to moisture helps initial growth of mold. Look out for the greenish, blackish or brownish colored patches on the damp wall that characterizes mold growth.
  • Odor: Mildew or musty odors is one of the most prominent sign of mold growth. If you experience a musty odor near damp/humid surfaces, you should look out for the other signs of mold growth.
  • Respiratory system response in the people: If you or anyone staying in the house is hypersensitive to change in surrounding environmental conditions and experience some kind of allergic reaction or respiratory system related problems when you/the person is inside the house, then in that case there is a possibility of high mold growth.
  • Poisoning due to mold: Poisoning due to the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) formed by mold is one of the most prominent sign of potential mold growth.

Black Mold Poisoning

After mold formation, it needs nutrition to grow, which it obtains by degrading the surface it is growing on. During the process of degrading surface for nutrition, mold causes formation of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). These VOCs are harmful to human respiratory and nervous systems.

If a person is subjected to high exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds formed by mold, it affects human respiratory and central nervous systems and causes irritation to mucous membranes.

Health Effects Of Long Term Mold Exposure – The Symptoms Of Black Mold Poisoning:

  • Uneasiness in respiration
  • Headaches
  • Cough
  • Red eyes
  • Development of rashes and hives on skin
  • Nausea
  • Memory loss
  • In some cases, people experience bleeding in lungs
  • Lethargy
  • Dizziness
  • Lack in concentration
  • Problem caused due to irritation in mucous membranes
  • Asthma
  • Allergic reactions (such as itching of nose, runny nose etc.) of respiratory and/or nervous system etc
  • Irregularity in blood pressure
  • Damaged digestion and respiratory system
  • Infections of urinary track, problems in urination etc.
  • Pain in liver and other internal organs
  • High level or prolonged exposure to mold can lead to infertility in the patient

How Can Mold Be Controlled? Tips!

If you you are a mold sufferer and need to get rid of the mold in your home without expensive remediation costs, a serious mold removal plan will help.

  • Moisture is one of the most important factor for the growth of mold. By making it sure that the level of moisture is under check you can keep molds at bay. (Relative humidity i.e. RH can help in finding out when you need to dehumidify your building/house)
  • If there is any water leakage/intrusion, pipe leak, roof leak, condensation problem etc; it should be prevented first.
  • Ensure the air conditioners, HVAC systems, and air/ventilation ducts are clean. Normally mold formed in these systems are more dangerous as it easily escapes the human eye inspection.
