I tend to agree with most of the comments above, if you cannot remove 100% of the black mould in your carpet and underlay you are putting the health of those inside that environment at risk. When I am confronted with problems like this I ask myself would I be happy if it were my family at risk.

I don’t think you would ever get mold or even the smell of mold out of a carpet, you might think you have, but the smell will always linger.

When mold finds itself on porous materials, such as carpets, the safest best is just to remove it. The dangers are severe enough that it’s worth the extra time/money to be safe.

This is a great article on the things that can be done to help eliminate carpet mold, as well as prevent it from being a nightmare. Carpet mold can be very frustrating at times, however if you know the correct method in eliminating it, you will be able to save your carpet. Great post! Keep it up!

Just to add – you should act fast whenever you find mould – within just a few days, the bacteria can break down the carpet fibres and backing – ruining your carpet. Its also recommended to call in a professional when using any kind of bactericidal chemicals – many require neautralisation and thorough rinsing to remove harmful residues in the cleaned carpet.

Great advice on how to deal with the problem of mold. Don’t forget to mention that the problem can go down into the carpet underlay and, like wicking, can reappear unexpectedly when you thought you had already taken care of it. Prevention of course is better than cure and keeping your carpets clean on a reasonably regular basis goes a long way in stopping yourself from having the problem in the first place.

If you can’t get rid of the mold after using a cleaner on it I wouldn’t hesitate to completely replace the carpet. Mold can be dangerous to your health.

How do you find the central infection point? Do you have to rip up the entire carpet?
